Tech Support
So, Typepad seems to be having some minor issues again. They’ve got a nice list posted of times they’re planning maintenance, but . . . there have been problems with comments for the last 24 hours or so (either not being able to make them, or their e-mails not coming through to me, whatever), and since the first “scheduled” maintenance is for tonight, that’s a little worrying.
Now, I still like Typepad, and I like the convenience of everything being set up for me, but . . . I am thinking about how nice it would be to have my own domain name, and a system that doesn’t go down so much . . . even though I know only the bare minimum of HTML and when you get into other jargon, I get lost . . .
Anyone have any suggestions? Dreamhost? Expression Engine? How complicated are these? How much work to get my blog up and running? How much control do I have? How much would I have to do myself? How much support is there for getting things set up in the first place? (I figure, upkeep I can do, but doing a complete layout on my own? Hey, the Olympics are coming!)

Tannenbaum.

No clue about where to get hosting, etc, done – but I did register the domain names http://www.stumblingoverchaos.com and .net, for when I’m ready to take the plunge. It only costs $15/year to buy the domain name.
ScoutJ just moved off of blogspot yesterday to her own domain, so she probably has some ideas. Snowball moved a week or so ago.
i have used dreamhost for over 5 years, I had my husband put moveable type on it for me. It’s gotten a lot easier sence we first did it. I heve never had any problems with it as it rights out to static HTML (I used the perl version not the SQL version). If you have it in a database if it goes down ur site goes down.
I host yarncourtesans.com on siteground and have been very impressed with their customer service so far. I use the serendipity blogging platform which you can read more about at s9y.com
) Let me know if you have any questions – I love answering geeky questions ;o)) Seriously. I love answering geeky questions *grin*
Can’t help you out – I could be hosted for free by my cousin’s company, blogging software is free, I’m just too lazy to do anything about it.
That, and the set-up all looks scary. I’m having enough trouble wrapping my mind around being able to get my Olympic sweater started. Maybe I should practice that tomorrow on some leftover yarn.
You can have a dedicated domain name with typepad, but I believe you have to do it with the pro version. I bought my domain at godaddy.com for $1.99 and was able in my total non-tech way to figure out how to get the domain name in. Typepad has a whole section on how to do this in the help and the domain people are usually helpful.
