Wheel

W is for Wheel of course!

Specifically, my new Majacraft Little Gem II.

(Please, don’t anyone tell me you’re surprised. And yes, I know that by rights this post should have been up on Sunday, but I didn’t HAVE the wheel on Sunday!)

The wood is just so pretty! Really, very photogenic.

Now, onto other things.

Now, my plan for this afternoon was to do a bunch of administrative
kind of things. (1) I went to the bank to make a deposit. (Since my
paycheck is direct-deposited, all other checks tend to sit and wait
until I get around to it . . . this can take a while. Like, the day
before they reach their 6-month expiration. That kind of thing.)

img_2310 (2) I voted. If you’re in the U.S. you DID vote today, right?? Just remember, you’re part of a democracy, and if you don’t speak up when it counts, you have no right to complain later on!

(3) I went to the lawyer’s office and signed my will. Funny story: I was sitting in the waiting room, coughing, and the lawyer stuck his head out the door and said, “We’d better hurry!”

I guess that’s funnier if you’ve actually HEARD my cough.

(4) I went to DMV to renew my driver’s license. Now, up until now, I’ve been renewing my license via the mail–it was convenient, quick, and I didn’t have to stand in line, but now New Jersey requires a photo license. Not just a photo, either, but a new, high-tech Digital photo license. One which requires a wealth of information in terms of proving your identity. (Think I’m kidding? Check out the official guidelines.) So, I gathered together things like my passport, my social security card, a bank statement, got my checkbook . . . all that . . . and after the lawyer’s office, headed to DMV.

They were closed for Election Day.

Now, I ask you, does that make any sense? Why do DMV employees need to have Election Day off from work? Was it all the offices, or just that one? Certainly the website doesn’t say anything about it. I wasn’t the only one upset about it, either. I had blocked out an afternoon to get all these things done, and . . . now the most tedious one is still to go. I went back to the office afterward–my boss is short-handed as it is, and I would have felt guilty taking an extra hour and a half for no reason whatsoever. Especially when I’m going to have to do it TOMORROW.

Stupid DMV…. I think they’re trying to make this entire process as inconvenient as possible. Heck, you can even renew your passport through the mail . . . Isn’t that ultimately a more “official” form of id than a driver’s license?

Oh. My favorite part? My current, non-photo license doesn’t count toward my 6, required ID “points” for renewing. Gotta love that.

img_2298 On the plus side, I got this gift from my best friend today. My favorite Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movie, “The Gay Divorcee.” The number for “Night and Day” is perhaps my very favorite dance of theirs (”Lost my Penny” is a possible contender), and the Correspondent who’s supposed to help Ginger get her divorce, who goes around misquoting the password to everyone? (”Fate is the foolish thing. Take a chance,” for example, instead of “Fate is a foolish thing to take chances with.”) Priceless. Love it. Thanks, Dawn!

This is good, because the order Mom placed for my birthday–accessories for my new wheel–hasn’t even been shipped yet. She’s a little upset, but I keep telling her, it’s not like I’m five anymore . . . I can expend a little patience for a good cause!

  1. I need to do the DMV thing, too. But our State’s website specifically warns against going the day after a holiday, because of the longer lines. I’m waiting until next week.

  2. Well, I got stuck in the arm with a flu shot before I even went to vote (35 minutes in line) and then came home and got a bad tick bite! Not fair. Sort of like quitting smoking and immediately getting shingles…..which happened.

  3. Congratulations! She’s just gorgeous (it is a she, right? Most of them seem to be). Does she have a name yet? Happy (belated) birthday!

  4. Glad you are enjoying your wheel! If the accessories come later, it’s like extending your birthday through the month, which is always good.

Our DMV was pretty painless thank goodness, and so was voting today. But I’m not going to bore you with my trying experiences with local bike shops, trying to order a present for C!

  5. The new wheel is gorgeous. Congratulations!

  6. Okey dokey:
    1. Unless you are as rich as Uncle Scrooge McDuck, you should not have cheques lying around till they are almost expired.
    2. You didn’t actually expect government employees to do their job, did you? (apologies to any gov’t employees who actually do work, you are keeping the country afloat)
    3. Ummm, actually, no number 3…

    Ciao

  7. Looks like you’ve got plenty to keep you occupied until you mom’s gift arrives. Happy birthday!

  8. congrats on the wheel! enjoy!

  9. Wow. New Jersey’s only getting around to requiring photos on driver’s licenses? My first California license, way back in the 1970s had my picture on it (they weren’t digital back then), and as long as I can remember, my parents had their photos on their licenses, and my memory goes back to the early 60s… Wow. Hm. Interesting.

    P.S. I voted! :-D

  10. Congrats on the Wheel!!! Many happy days to you, spinning on it!. Ah, the DMV (or MVC as they say now) I had to get mine done this past summer - not really too bad as I knew about the points needed - but utterly ridiculous that I had to bring my marriage license to prove that the state of NJ didn’t make a mistake the first time they issued me a license in my married name - nimcompoops! Used to be we had Election Day off because the schools were used for voting - but now since they’re not, and school’s not out I think the state workers should get back to work with the rest of us!!!

  11. i voted. liam’s stomach was upset, so i let him stay home, but i took him with me to the polling place. as we were walking in, he told me he wished he could vote! the kid’s been paying attention!

and what if you DON’T have a passport? nebraska has always had a photo id, since i can remember. they did recently change the format to digital, though. and we still have to go in to renew it, however, if you don’t have any accidents or tickets since you’re last renewal, you can skip the test.

  12. Oh ht/she is beautiful! :o) (do we know if it’s a he or a she yet?)

That sucks that you couldn’t get your license renewed - I can’t believe they get the entire day off for that! (I can’t make disparaging state worker remarks - RR’s brother and SIL both work for the State of NY and, while they seem to have ALOT of time off, they work they’re asses off - however, if any bridges in upstate NY collapse, guess who’s fault it is? *g*)

GREAT movie! One of my favorites, too! Chance is Foolishness!

  13. Not surprised at all! And hey, getting the accessories later will actually expand the birthday fun, right?

  14. The Rimu wood of Majacraft wheels is really lovely.

I’m not shocked that the DMV was closed for election day. It’s a government holiday in many places.

  15. Please let me know what you think about the Little Gem. I’m REALLY close to buying my first wheel, and I was first interested in the Little Gem but am now leaning towards the Rose or Suzie. I’d love to know your thoughts! Thanks.

  16. Oh a new wheel! How exciting. And what a pretty little wheel it is. I can’t wait to see what it spins up for you.

  17. Lovely “w” - she’s very pretty. the DMV thing is just stupid. But when have they ever cared about customer service?

  18. That wheel is absolutely beautiful! I am full of wheel envy.
