Fully Licensed
Believe it or not, the New Jersey Motor Vehicles Commission was actually OPEN today. (I know, I was surprised, too. I mean this was my third try.)
I knew right away that they were open, though–just by looking at how full the parking lot was.
To be fair, crowded though they were with the lunch crowd–and they were pretty packed when I got in there–everything moved along pretty quickly. They have a receptionist right at the door who’ll direct you to the line you need to be in, and who’ll check your documentation to make sure you have everything you need before you get any further. That alone is pretty helpful. I ended up going to four separate stations–each of which checked to make sure I had everything I needed along the way. Which, again, I found more reassuring than inconvenient. (Though knitting my sock with my hands full of miscellaneous documents was a little tricky.)
And when it came time for the photo? It’s all digital, of course. They have monitors right there so that, as soon as they snap the picture, you have a chance to go, “Oh, no, it’s horrible!!” before you get stuck with it on your license. Mine was pretty good on the first try, though, so that’s the one I went for, but I appreciated the option–and the fact that the woman behind the desk seemed to have people’s best photographic interests at heart. She convinced the man in front of me to take a second picture because the first one was rather too deer-in-the-headlights.
Of course, after two holidays in the last week, they really don’t have any reason to be cranky today, huh? Although, really, again to be fair, most of the people I talked to were reasonably pleasant. I was even told that my license number was lucky. And I was in and out in about an hour, smoothly, no problems. That really IS lucky.
I bought Sundara’s new “Tatami” kimono pattern today. First of all, it’s lovely. Second, as much as I’d love to knit it with her yarn (which, believe me, is still tempting), I’m thinking . . . that might look just lovely in, say, some handspun yarn??
Okay, a couple of things:
Check out the Purls of Hope, trying to raise money for a good cause.
And, then, this great video of stop-action music.
Hey, has anybody noticed that, now that we’re past the mid-term elections, the gas prices are starting to creep up again?
Also, thankfully, I borrowed a can of air from the office and blew out around my “D” key and (knock wood), so far, it seems to have helped. Phew!
Don’t forget–tomorrow, the 15th, is the last day for the Calendar Contest!

Tannenbaum.
House Calls

Hey! IE likes you again! (this is a quick little reminder that I’ve entered the contest).
So glad you got through and got your license! Those things can be SUCH a hassle.
Hurray for good DMV experiences! I was amazed the last time I went in–they had streamlined the process so much that I didn’t have any time to knit in line.
A nice experience at DMV and a good picture! It must’ve been your lucky day.
Chappy can’t steal a towel that’s his. That’s so cool, that he has his own logo towel.
Oh, tomorrow’s the last day for the calendar contest? I have one more entry I took today that I just posted on my blog.
Glad to hear you’re “legal”! I must say, they’ve improved the service at the CT DMV in the past few years, but it’s still a hassle.
Glad to know that the license renewal is done and over with. And that photo is pretty good.
Hey, that’s a good license picture! I wish my DMV let me have a second shot when I renewed in September. My photo is really, really bad.
Glad to hear you finally got to renew your license AND fixed your ‘d’ key ;o)
We have MVA Express offices in MD where we can get our licenses renewed. Almost always in and out in less than 20 minutes no matter how busy.
I think gas prices are creeping up because Thanksgiving is next week and demand is going to be huge. It always happens this time of year here in MD anyway.
I think that kimono would be great in handspun!
Gas prices out here are pretty much the same since the elections. $2.12/gallon by work yesterday.
Gas prices have gone up about 10 cents per gallon here since the election.
And that’s gotta be the best license photo I’ve seen. I look like I’m stoned in mine.
Sounds like NJ is way more organized than MO. Surprise, surprise. In MO, we go stand in line just to be told we’re in the wrong one. Gack. Yes, gas prices are up here again as well. And, I think your homespun peppermint will make a lovely kimono:)
Good photo! Thank goodness we don’t have to get those once a year. Gas here is (low) $2.25. That Kimono is really nice, something I’ll have to acquire eventually
The concert was good too, thanks for sharing 7 have a great day! I may a calendar pic Chappy would like. {Chappy}
Hey, that picture is pretty good. And yay for getting in and out within a reasonable amount of time. I’d love to see you use some handspun for the kimono – I think it would be wonderful.
I get to do the picture thing for my passport soon. That’s an awful one. You can’t smile or anything. I am really not looking forward to that piece of “art”. Although my sister had hers done and said that it’s worth it to do it in colour. It looks less like a mugshot then.
I love that kimono pattern! Congratulations on escaping the DMV unscathed.
Congrats on getting through the DMV unharmed. I had a hard time giving up my NJ driver’s license when I moved to Utah. NJ has the crazy “6 points” of identification process that made me think twice about giving the license up!
Yay! I finally got through! My calendar page post is on my blog today. It’s been fun seeing everyone’s November calendar pages around blogland for your contest.
Hi!…..been sooooo busy at work and missed you….am baaack! Our California DMV has a customer service time span: get you in and out in 5 minutes…..and you can make an appt……really great……you look divine….hope your weather is fine and you and Chappy, Mom and Dad are doing well!
I liked it when you could renew your license by mail (I’m dating myself). Of course there was no picture on them then – NJ was later in requiring that than many other states. Now that I’m in rural KY, I rarely run into anyone else when I go to renew. And this year they let me use the picture from four years ago.
