Grindstone

I know, I know, I didn’t post yesterday, and you were all worried . . . right?? (grin)

Really, I don’t miss a day very often. It’s kind of like at work–I’ve been there 15 years and have used a total of ONE sick day. Vacation time, absolutely, but not sick days. But on the days when I do take off, my boss tells me that people come in his office, “Where’s Debbie? Is she all right?” because they’re just not used to my being absent. So, you know, I wouldn’t want any of you to worry!

There’s no real reason that I didn’t post yesterday, although I wasn’t feeling great. I don’t know what, but something in the house triggered my allergies. My eyes were burning/watering whenever I’d sit in my favorite chair with Chappy–the same chair I sit in every day–and by dinner, my asthma was acting up. They still weren’t themselves this morning, either, so that I had to pull out my inhaler again this morning, and well . . . blah. I didn’t even knit last night. (Well, considering my eyes were decidedly NOT cooperating with anything I wanted to do, that’s probably a good thing, right?) I didn’t spin, either. In fact, yesterday is one of the first days I can think of in recent months that I didn’t do anything of any kind with some form of yarn.

So, of course, what did that leave me to talk about? (grin) Do you really want to hear about the return address labels I made with a photograph of my hand-written address, so that, even though it’s computer-generated, my return adress will still be in my hand writing?

See? I didn’t think so….

img_3934 About all I have to show is this–two bottles of “Soak” that came on Saturday. I’m so grateful for these, really, since (don’t hate me) I decidedly do not like the smell of Eucalan. Eucalyptus and Lavendar really do nothing for me–except make me sneeze. This line of “modern” scents suit me much better. I bought a bottle of the Citrus scent, but also a bottle of their limited-time “Celebrations” scent because I was curious what a holiday-themed wool wash would smell like. (And no, I can’t really describe it, either, but it’s lovely.)

Say, did you know about this online spinning magazine?

And, how cool are these works of art made from book illustrations?

That’s about it . . .

Because, really, we won’t discuss Dad’s car accident . . .

Well, okay. The short version? An SUV that went through a red light, caused another (new, poor fellow) SUV to graze the side of Dad’s car while he sat at the intersection waiting for the light to change. He had to climb out the passenger side until the tow truck was able to disengage the SUV from his door, and luckily, his car is largely okay (although since he’s likely to need a whole new side panel and possibly a new door, it’s still a couple $K of damage–just not serious damage, you know?) and he himself completely unhurt. The poor fellow who hit him, despite his best efforts, looked to have sprained both his wrists, trying to steer out of harm’s way. (Ouch–that’s not only painful, but horribly inconvenient–BOTH wrists?) The idiot who caused the accident and insisted that the light was green–despite witnesses to the contrary–was unharmed.

This just doesn’t seem to be Dad’s week, huh? Although, again, it could have been so much worse . . . I’d say his luck is still mostly holding . . .

  1. I didn’t really know about many other alternatives to eucalan, so this is definitely good info. I’ll have to check out that spinning mag too. Had no idea! And thank goodness your Dad is ok!! As soon as I read “Dad’s car accident” my first thought was, “This is *definitely* not his week!”

  2. wow. Your Dad is VERY lucky!
    Holiday scented wool wash?
    giggle.
    Hope your allergies settle down.
I for one did miss you
and was just about to send you
    a *hey, you okay?* email….

  3. Dad is having a rough November. I’ll bet he’ll be glad when December 1 rolls around.

I know someone who broke both wrists while roller-blading. (Safety equipment? Bah! I’m a manly man, safety equipment is for kids.) His employer was not pleased. He was working as a pilot for a major airline at the time and the accident occurred in the middle of one of his trips.

  4. Wow. You’re dad is a bit under a dark cloud these days. Hope the sun comes out for him soon!

  5. Yikes! How scary for your dad - I’m glad he’s ok! And bummer about your allergies. UGH. Hate that. Have you ever tried Orvus? It’s a horse shampoo, basically - it’s just straight shampoo, no scents or anything. A massive tub of it costs $20 or less and will last you nearly a lifetime…

  6. Of course, I meant for handknits, not your hair…

  7. To quote a card I once saw,”Into every life a little rain must fall…..It’s these sudden downpours that really suck!” Here’s hoping the downpour stops soon.

  8. Ouch, your poor dad! I can sympathize on all fronts, having been there and done both. Hope things are looking up for him.

  9. having just finished writing out all the envelopes for the Chrismtas cards, I would like to hear about those labels!

  10. Your poor dad! I’m glad his part wasn’t serious. I’m very glad he wasn’t hurt. Hugs. Big hugs.

  11. Oh my… I’m so glad your Dad is ok. I think he needs to stay in bed for a few days and let the universe get over these fits it’s having.

  12. Actually, I really like the hand-written address label thingy. (Not that your dad’s accident isn’t important!) I just bought a new address stamp since we moved, and it’s lost already.

    Maybe I’ll try this….

  13. So glad to hear that your Dad is ok. Car accidents stink and it figures that the jerk that caused it didn’t have a lump or a bump on him.

I love the computer-generated handwritten label idea and I may just have to copy that one for myself!

You’re not alone, I also despise the smell of Eucalan and currently use Suave lavender and lilac shampoo and conditioner on all my handspun and my knits. Smells wonderful and is dirt cheap. =)

  14. I’ve been tempted by the Soak products. I’m not so much into citrus, but I may just have to try the holiday one just to see what a holiday smells like.

About your allergies–could Chappy have come into contact with something outside and is bringing it in on his coat? Maybe that’s why you notice it when he’s sitting next to you.

Hope you feel yourself again soon. So glad your dad is okay.

  15. Would you all be careful, please? There’s also a fleece wash that’s new. I can’t remember the name, but saw it in Spin-Off. I’m thinking of trying that on my fleece “Grant”.

  16. Oh man, this is definitely not Dad’s week, is it? Glad he is okay and that while a pain to have to repair the car, it still is just a car. Geez.

I hope the eyes are better too! Aren’t those days without any wool at all just an anathema. I had a few recently myself. Felt decidedly odd too.

  17. I just got some Soak too because I feel exactly the same about Eucalan! Man, your dad just needs to get back in bed until next week - he’s not having a good run of luck. I hope things perk up around your house, but a break every now and then can be a good thing.

  18. Oh, I’m glad to see your dad wasn’t hurt. Seems like a lot of drivers just don’t pay attention to the lights any more. And I know how that asthma can sneak up on you. Hope it clears up soon.

  19. Oh your poor dad, even when one isn’t injured, accidents are horribly inconvenient.

I did not know of that spinning online magainze. Thanks! Can’t wait to spend some time purusing their site.

And I’m liking the idea of that soap! I may have to try it out, I’m not a huge fan of those others either, but use them out of need.

  20. Oh my goodness! I’m SO glad your Dad is OK. Maybe he should take a couple days off and stay in the house! :)
    Send him my regards please.

What a week you guys have had. Hopefully there won’t be another like it for a VERY long time.

  21. Oh, I’m sooo glad your dad is fine. You’re right, it really isn’t his week so far! Yikes!

Both of those Soak scents sound right up my alley! So far I haven’t bought any special wash/rinse soap because I mostly do socks it seems but I keep thinking it would be nice to have some for some of the itchier handspun etc… I shoulda put it on my list!

  22. Hope you are feeling better and glad to hear your Dad is ok. Thanks for the link to the spinning magazine - after a quick look, it looks interesting.

  23. I’m so glad your father wasn’t hurt.

  24. So glad your Dad wasn’t hurt in the accident.

I really like your idea of printing labels from a photo of your handwriting. Very clever :)

  25. Poor Dad! Jeeze. at least he wasn’t hurt though. Can always get another car. I do love the idea of a Holiday Scented Wool Wash. ~smile~

  26. I hope your dad isn’t sore from the accident, and also that the kidney stone issue has resolved. I’ve heard those are really painful.

I’m so curious — how did you make those labels with your handwriting? There’s so many computer things I want to at least understand, if I’m not ready to learn. I need a Mac so badly…is that what you use?

  27. I was just reading your Aug 1 post about the Lendrum and the Woolee Winder. Was the noise problem with the Lendrum head when plying? Mine is suddenly doing. Comes to a freezing halt even.

  28. Oh, your poor dad! I hope things start looking up…

  29. It really pisses me off when the person who causes the accident walks away without a scratch. Jackass.

I’m glad to hear your Dad is okay!

(catching up on blogreading…sorry so late…)
