Knitting!

See? Tonight, I knitted.

I’m still working on the “hood extension” of my Celtic Icon. This is the eighteen inches of cabling that goes up the back of the hood and over the top of the head.

Eighteen inches. It’s endless.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s still narrower than the actual back of the sweater, just as wide as the cable itself. And therefore, it’s (theoretically) going faster than the rest of the back because, again, it’s narrower.

And yet…. It feels like it’s never going to be finished.

Let’s not forget that I still have the two fronts, the sides, and the sleeves to go . . . I think I’m going to be knitting on this sweater a long, long, time (grin).

Good thing it’s so pretty, and with such a great cable, huh? Again, it’s the Celtic Icon sweater from “Inspired Cable Knits.” It’s beautiful, just . . . well, as I say. Endless. I’ve got about 6″ done, which means . . . 12″ to go. Oy.

I’ve done some spinning tonight, too–merino/silk singles on my Little Gem. The other day, I started plying my singles on my Journey Wheel, but that was the day the family was down and I cooked and socialized and all that, so I didn’t get it all plied. Pretty, though.

Incidentally, am I the only one who doesn’t name her (his) spinning wheels? Carole‘s looking for suggestions for her new Hitchhiker, which made me think about this . . . mine don’t have names, they’re just my beloved wheels. My Lendrum, Little Gem, and Journey Wheel. (Although, for full disclosure, my Dad’s been calling that one “The Clock” because it has something resembling a Grandfather clock’s tick every time the drive band knot goes around. Do nicknames count?)

Anyway, we’re all kind of tired. Mom had gum surgery yesterday and her mouth is still sore–she’s been walking around tonight with an icepack pressed to her cheek. Dad, of course, will be getting older tomorrow, and you know how much entering a new decade can be. Chappy’s exhausted just trying to keep tabs on everyone–and worrying about his sore Grandma, of course. I’m a little tired myself, though at least my neck isn’t as sore as yesterday.

And, our neighbor? Still no real news. Mom went to visit this afternoon and saw not only her friend, but her grown daughters as well. But thet still haven’t determined exactly what’s wrong, or what to do about it–though she said that if she needs heart surgery, she’s already decided to go to Morristown Memorial for that. They have a great reputation for that. I just hope it won’t come to that . . . and I can’t even imagine how bored she must be!

  1. that is one gorgeous sweater (even if endless)!

Hope your mom is doing okay (I’m pressing an icepack up to myself currently, and know how much fun that isn’t!), and happy early birthday to your dad! :)

  2. sing it with me: this is the sweater that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends. debbie started knitting it not knowing what it was and she’ll continue knitting it forever just because. . . . (ducks)

  3. My wheels don’t have names either – you’re definitely not alone in that.

  4. That cable is beautiful. I am still working with fuzzy stuff, so it is nice to see real yarn and knitting. Good luck with the endless cable.

  5. Wow….that is SO pretty.

  6. Very pretty!!!! Once you’re done with yours… maybe you’ll want to knit one for me hihihi.

Oh, it is Wednesday today… so:
Happy Birthday Mr Chappysmom Dad :) I’m wishing you loads of good golfing days :)

    cheers Eva

  7. Beautiful sweater. No,your not the only one who doesn’t name your wheels – I haven’t named a single one of mine either.
Morristown is a great hospital – took my youngest their last spring to their pediatric ER – they do know their stuff. Hope it all works out for the best.

  8. Wow! Your sweater will be worth the wait, it’s gorgeous! A very happy birthday to your dad, and some well wishes for your mom and her good buddy.

  9. I don’t name my wheels either, so you’re not the only one. That cable really looks fantastic!

  10. My cable back feels exactlt like that right now!! WHEN is it going to end. It will be beautiful though

  11. It’s a beautiful sweater. I love the cable pattern.

  12. No, you’re not alone. I don’t name my wheels other than calling them by the name of the manufacturer or the name the manufacturer gave them. So, the Ashford Joy is The Joy, the Louet S75 is the Louet, and teh Majacraft Susie Pro actually goes by the Majacraft, or my Susie, but usually the Majacraft.

The Sweater is looking wonderful! Thanks for sharing it with us!

  13. When I have work done on my mouth I’m sore for days afterwards. I sympathize with your Mom. Happy b’day to Dad! I LOVE your sweater. It’s stunning even though it seems slow. And, no, I do not name my spinning wheels either. They know they’re loved.

  14. Lots of people don’t name their wheels. I don’t think you are weird. I named mine because I thought El Matchador was a funny name, but if there were nothing to call him, I would just call him the Matchless or Schacht. However, one of yours definitely has a name now if you call him The Clock. ;o)

Hope your mum heals quickly. Mouth pain sucks.

  15. Don’t you just love Inspired Knits. I can’t wait to make a project from there.

Amy Boogies recently discussed the fact that there’s a void somewhere between 6 and 12 inches where all the inches we think we knit have gone because they don’t show up on our project. I do believe she is correct in this theory. IT would explain why 18 inches takse such a long time to knit.

  16. Oooh, the cable is gorgeous. I have that book and remember seeing quite a few patterns I liked. I guess I need to look through it again (grin).

  17. I haven’t named my wheel or really anything I’ve owned since my very first car. Of course my wheel came with a defacto name, but it is a name I don’t particularly care for…

Your sweater is going to be worth all the hours. The cabling is gorgeous as is the color!

  18. I joke that I had too much trouble naming my kids and pets to go through naming my wheels or cars! Besides, they are TOOLS, not people. And have perfectly lovely names given them by their maker: Minstrel, Symphony, and Sonata. BTW, Typepad thinks I’m a spammer on MY OWN BLOG…go figure!

  19. Hope your mom is feeling better today! That sweater is going to be gorgeous – hang in there!

  20. I really like that Celtic Icon sweater. The rest of the book I could pretty much take or leave, but that one is gorgeous!

And my dad and my uncles were all born at Morristown Memorial. Heh. ;-)

  21. Simply beautiful! I would be against naming the wheel. If you name it, it has a personality. If it has a personality, it can get moody. If it gets moody, it can get cranky and pissy. See hwere I’m going? Hope all are soom on the mend there.

  22. You’re definitely not alone. My wheels aren’t named either.

  23. I remember well the year-long relationship I had with my ice pack. I hope your Mom is doing better :o (

Your sweater looks gorgeous – I love that color!

I’ve only named one of my wheels, the Ashford is being stubborn and hasn’t given up his/her name yet ;o) Oh, and I did name the new Jeep: HAL 2000 – Hal for short ;o)

  24. That cable is stunning. Gorgeous. Wonderful. I love it! But you were probably gathering that. LOL

Is that yarn red? It sure looks red to me. If it is, you should join the Red Sweater KAL.

    If not, well… LOL

Hope your mom’s gums heal up quickly. That just sounds awful. Poor mom! Glad to hear that your neighbor’s home, eventhough they don’t know yet what’s wrong. Hugs.

  25. Your sweater looks great! Hopefully you have an easy project to work on too when you need a break.

Also I hope everyone there is feeling better soon!

  26. Good wishes to all the bipeds of Chappy and love the sweater!!!! That color will look great on you.

  27. that cable is gorgeous! and in that color, it just totally takes it up several notches. you can do!!!! just keep knitting…just keep knitting…just keep knitting…

  28. lovely lovely sweater – can’t wait to see it complete. The cables are fabulous, and worth all the knitting that you’re doing!

  29. Didn’t anyone tell you that hoods, while they look manageable, actually are approximately 2.5 times the square footage of the rest of your sweater? It’s uncanny.

  30. Your Celtic hood is gorgeous. It’ll end. It has to. Physics demands it. Doesn’t it? There’s something defiant about endless knitting.

I love naming things, but some just don’t. Every car I’ve had up to this one has a name. My sewing machine has a name too, but it’s not fit for public consumption.
