Pop!

In "Tonight’s Stupidity," we have Deb, who…

1. Suggested pizza for supper. There’s nothing wrong with pizza, mind you, except that the cheese can aggravate my asthma. As a rule, I don’t eat pizza, but Mom’s shoulder was really sore and I was tired, so . . . it was the easiest supper.

2. But, since it WAS pizza, I only had one piece–keeping the wheezing risk at an acceptible level. Except that that left me feeling a little hungry.

3. So, after my shower, when I went downstairs to make some tea, I decided to make some popcorn.

4. Except the popcorn, for whatever reason, didn’t pop up fluffy, but as hard, tough, little kernels.

5. Which led directly to my breaking my tooth. All of a sudden there was a grating sound not commensurate with chewing popcorn, and when I spit out what was in my mouth . . . there was a chunk of tooth. A fairly large chunk, in fact.

6. Of course, our dentist’s office is closed on Thursday. Luckily (so far, knock wood), this isn’t actually painful, but, um . . .

Stupid popcorn.

Petdental_logopetThe timing is good in ONE way, though, in that it gives me the perfect opening to tell you that February is Pet Dental Health Month.

Since I certainly don’t want something similar happening to Chappy, I’m going to try to brush his teeth every day during February . . . something I tend to neglect. Not that he objects to getting his teeth brushed. He loves his poultry-flavored toothpaste. (I love that Plaque Off Fresh Breath liquid for his water dish, too–it really does seem to make a difference, and is good for cats and dogs.)

The problem with brushing Chappy’s teeth is that he’s all too eager to HELP. He chews on the brush, which, I figure means it gets between his teeth, which is good . . . except that I can never actually get it where I WANT to brush. But, at least the toothpaste is getting in there, right? I’m trying….

For that matter, here’s a handy little list of pet-related holidays. Chappy, in particular, is looking forward to February 23rd, National Dog Biscuit Day, and is just as glad we missed January 14th, National Dress Up Your Pet Day . . . as if I’d do that to him!!

  1. The flavors of their toothpaste is rather gaggy though. Not to them of course, but blaaaa. You’re a good mom. Good luck with your little pearlie.

  2. I hate trying to brush my kitties’ teeth. they don’t like it. Even with the tuna flavooured toothpaaste. So I give them dental food. It’s really big kibble that they have to bite into and it scrapes the stuff off their teeth. The vet suggested it when we were talking about one of my cats teeth. It works! and it’s easy! yay!

  3. oh no! hope it continues to not be painful and hope you can get in there on friday! :/

Boris likes to chew on the toothbrush as well. I figure that’s better than nothing… Ging actually lets me brush her teeth. Of course, she has perfectly clean teeth and Boris has grimy teeth, sigh.

I may need to look for this plaque stuff too! It would be good for all three of the fuzzies! thanks for the mention of that.

  4. oh no! i hope you can hold out pain free until friday!

  5. oh NO! That totally sucks. I hope it doesn’t start hurting - I feel for you!

We found a toothbrush bone for Beanie which she loves - but she gets minty doggie toothpaste. She loves minty - she’ll attack you if she hears tic tacs in your pocket ;o)

  6. So sorry about the tooth!

  7. Ack, I hope the dental visit to fix that is quick and painless. Two of my girls (cats) are going in for their checkups this month and I’m expecting at least one of them (she with the dragon breath) is going to need a subsequent cleaning and most likely an extraction or two. Gabby’s the youngest girl in my menagerie but she’s definitely got the worst teeth!

  8. Oh yuck! It is no fun to break a tooth. DH and I are really paranoid about hearing strange noises ehile eating-is it our ages? I shudder at the thought of brushing sharp puppy teefies. My sister’s kitty had gingivitis-keep brushing!

  9. Max chews on his toothbrush too. :) I hope you can get in as soon as possible to fix that tooth of yours! Soft foods, and you might have some temperature sensitivity until its fixed. Good luck! Hopefully it’s not very serious!

  10. Elvis saw a new vet last summer for something that might have needed anesthesia (but not after all) he checked all over for other stuff that could be done at the same time and was amazed at how great El’s teeth were. He had to double check his age (9!) since they were so good and didn’t need any work. If only mine were in the same shape.

  11. We got that fresh breath water for our kitties too! My Molly has horrible breath and needs to have a cleaning and an extraction, so the vet recommended this to keep it under control until the time comes. I will go fill up her bowl now!

  12. broken tooth! Aieeee! I’m glad it’s not painful, at least–that’s a relief.

Lola’s going to have her teeth cleaned soon. When we go, I’ll ask about that Fresh Breath stuff–I’d never heard of it before.

  13. wow, yesterday must have been tooth-breaking day. liam’s language arts teacher, who is the sponsor for the school’s knitting club, broke a tooth yesterday, and had to cancel. i wasn’t able to make it anyway, as sean was sick, but still.

here’s hoping that the dentist will be easy on you tomorrow.

  14. Hope your dental visit isn’t/wasn’t too horrible. We’ve got to do something about Charlie’s teeth once we get the thyroid under control. He has that bad breath that you’re talking about.

  15. Oh, your poor tooth!! I had a similar experience with an ice cube once…
