Nothing particularly original tonight, so . . .

Booking Through Thursday

  • Have you ever missed an important appointment because
you have become so engrossed in a book you forgot the time or were up
so late reading that you didn’t wake up in time? Been late to work
because you couldn’t resist the temptation and left the house too late?

No, I’ve never missed an appointment. (I’m always early to pretty much everything.) And I haven’t been late to work . . . well, not by more than a minute or two . . . though, there have been times when I’ve really needed to finish a chapter and had to push things a bit. Missing sleep, though? Oh my yes. In fact I have a “rule” that I won’t let myself start a new, tempting book any earlier in the week than Thursday, so that if I get sucked in and stay up too late, it’s only a day until I get a chance to sleep in (grin).

  1. Ha – I would have to say yes and yes. :)

  2. What a good rule! I wish I’d heard that one years ago…..

  3. books always draw me in :-) but then again, so does 8 hours of sleep!

  4. I don’t usually miss appointments for reading. Sometimes I will be a bit late getting to a friends house. I can always tell when a book is good when it comes before sleep. I am actually pretty good about going to sleep when I am tired, but there are always a few books here and there that tempt me to stay up really late.

  5. I never missed an appointment, but I did miss my stop one day on the PATH train because I was so engrossed! I’ve also stayed up waaaay too late including one night when I was in Albany for a wedding. The hotel had an 11am checkout and I was up until 5:30 when I finally finished the book. It was a very long day which included a long drive home.

  6. I never missed an appointment. However, once I got on the wrong subway and was reading such a good book that I never noticed I was on the wrong train. When I finally looked up from my book, I was way the hell up in the northeast corner of the Bronx somewhere. I was on my way to a Yankee game and ended up being an hour late to the game. I frequently miss subway stops because I’m reading, but ususally notice after one or two stops.

  7. I have a question for you–Let’s say you’ve started a new book. A book that grabs you by the throat and pulls you in. A book you can’t wait to find out how it ends. Do you skip to the last chapter to see what happens? Why or why not?
