Frivolous

Since the more serious topics are breaking my heart today, I thought I’d just touch on light things today.

Like, our refrigerator decor–since Chris posted hers.

As you can see, we’re big on family photos.

And, of course, Martha’s Vineyard paraphenalia.

Here’s a closer look at two of my favorites–a Peanuts cartoon from a roll of paper towels (of all things), and a quote from Thomas Edison that I love. “If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.”

That Nor’easter still isn’t quite gone yet. It’s still been spritzing little bits of rain on and off all day. But at least the roads downtown (or, all the ones I saw) are clear. And most of my co-workers’ basements are at least improved up to the “damp” stage if not actually “dry.” So that’s something.

And, at least I can make a cup of tea. That’s something, too. (We’ll just ignore the fact that my parents went out to the movies with friends, leaving me home without the means of cooking supper . . . I mean, I told them to go and have a good time, and I meant it, but so much for the “We’re all in this together” attitude. Not that Dad really misses the stove not working . . . I’m not entirely sure he even knows how to turn it on. But that’s another story.)

Oh, and my morning oatmeal cooked quite nicely in my cheap little rice cooker . . . although tomorrow I’m going to need to stir it a little more often to keep it from boiling over….

Back on that serious subject, though? A page of links to online presences of the victims–My Space pages, articles, awards, blogs . . . bunches of things about the way they lived their lives.

Like I said. Heartbreaking.

  1. I LOVE the Edison quote – I hadn’t seen that before. Fun to see your fridge art, too!

Thanks for the link to the page o’ links…

  2. I’m glad to hear you and your family are OK from the storm. We have the damp basement, but everything else is fine, all things considered, compared to what some other poor families are dealing with right now.

I’m glad you have tea again. I’d be lost without my kettle.

  3. I love the Peanuts paper towels! I wish I bought loads of them since not one supermarket near me carries them. I guess I’ll just have to deal with the boring “no design on them” select-o-size towels.

  4. Great fridge stuff! I’ve always thought that people who have stark white fridges are a little…weird. You have to have SOMETHING on there! ;o)

Glad to hear your basement didn’t get flooded – we had 10″ of water but had a pump already from last year so RR took care of it (in between going to other people’s houses and pumping out their basements with the FD. I like those calls better than the structure fire one he had this morning) ;o) Also, our basement is dirt and crud already so…no big deal other than the damp…and having to relight the water heater.

  5. Cool frig photos! Family and a great quote, what could be better on a refrigerator? Well, other than my brother & sil’s cool chalk frig.

Isn’t that so sad about Virginia Tech? I didn’t even hear about it until I got home from work last night. So sad. Not even a year later than the Dawson College shootings last September in Montreal. So sad.

  6. What would we do with fridgies to hold some of our stuff? Tragedy indeed, makes one think harder (thoughts that shouldn’t be associated with going to college)about their kids going off to higher education.

  7. I love fridge art. Ours is pretty eclectic with photos of all the grandkids, a calendar and projects the monkeys bring home from school.

Flooding, while better in some spots, is way worse in others. Monday, the Passaic River near the kids school was high but still within its banks. Yesterday it seriously flooded. Most of the roads near school are flooded, but the school itself was not. I had a major challenge in dropping them off and getting to the train station on time. Thank goodness I’d left early this morning!

  8. Great fridge art. :) Glad you solved the tea problem too.

The VT thing… there just are no words.

  9. Hooray for Jersey Boy Edison! He’s the king of quotes. Nice frig photos. Since we got a new frig last year, it’s been naked except for 2 tiny magnets.
