Bookless

Booking Through Thursday

It happens even to the best readers from time to time… you close the
cover on the book you’re reading and discover, to your horror, that
there’s nothing else to read. Either there’s nothing in the house, or
nothing you’re in the mood for. Just, nothing that “clicks.” What do
you do?? How do you get the reading wheels turning again?

————–I hate it when that happens! In fact, it’s one of the reasons I like reading series so much . . . the progression from book to book is already laid out (grin). This usually happens to me when I’ve read too many “similar” books in a row–either the same genre, the same author, the same series, the same “feel” . . . whatever. So I find that the only thing that really works for me is to do a 180 and pick something completely different. A mystery if I’ve been reading too much fantasy. A historical-fiction book if I’ve been reading too much science-fiction. Something completely unlike what I’ve just finished. Something fresh to the palate.

  1. Hi Deb! I agree with you about picking another genre to read. Luckily we don’t stick to one genre, or else we’d get bored so easily! Happy BTT! :)

  2. I’m right there with you on series… I love them.

  3. I agree. Pick something completely different.

  4. i tagged you for a meme on my blog.

  5. Those are times when being a magazine junkie is good. I always have a backlog stashed somewhere, and sometimes magazines are a good palate cleanser.

  6. I agree – just go in a new direction. I’ve been stuck on memoirs for a while and now all the people seem to sound the same. Time to mix it up!

  7. I do the same thing as a reading-slump prevention device–I always vary my reading from book to book. It’s been working very well so far.

  8. I hadn’t thought about that angle to the question, but it is true — sometimes it is not a break from reading in general, but a switch in genre that’s needed.

  9. I’ve been in a reading rut lately. Nothing has been appealing to me.

  10. Magazines are a good backup – especially the New Yorker, or Atlantic, since they have such great short stories.

  11. i don’t usually have that problem, because i keep 15-18 library books at one time. i also have an on-hold list at the library, so when i start running low, i can just click, and they’re delivered to my local branch. it SOOOOO ROCKS! the problem i run into is when a book ends up needing to be turned in before i’ve gotten to it (we’re allowed 4 renewals, with 3 weeks per period, but if a book is requested, ya gotta give it up or pay a fine, sigh. i’m in that pickle with the wheel of time series right now (i’ve never been through the whole thing, so i’m giving it another shot)

  12. That’s exactly how I feel too. I have recently developed a liking for fiction. I’ve not touched fiction for the longest time and suddenly I’m into it. Gosh, I’m a moody person. I just realized that I’m into brain-teasers now. Mood swing going full swing. LOL.

  13. I too sometimes go in a different direction when I find myself reading too much of one type of book. I do try to mix it up in general anyway just to avoid coming close, but that doesn’t always work out. Sometimes I go through phases where all I want to read is fantasy or mysteries.
