BTT: Statistics
There was a widely bruited-about statistic reported last week, stating that 1 in 4 Americans did not read a single book last year. Clearly, we don’t
fall into that category, but . . . how many of our friends do? Do you
have friends/family who read as much as you do? Or are you the only
person you know who has a serious reading habit?
This question’s an easy one for me. No-one in my family reads nearly as much as I do. Not even close. (I mean, you’ve seen my reading lists, right? Seen my personal statistics?) But, that said, my father reads regularly. My mom and my sister both read. My niece likes to but doesn’t find that much time for it.
As to friends? Well, my best friend growing up . . . I’ve known her for, lord, just about exactly 32 years, since we met the first week I was in third grade . . . she and I read constantly in high school, exchanging books, reading the same books at the same time . . . discussing all the finer details. I can’t begin to tell you how much I absolutely loved that, and how much I really, really miss it. I hate not having someone around who loves to read the same things I do and who likes to talk about them. And my other friends? They read rarely, if at all, and I can’t remember the last time I saw a co-worker with anything other than a magazine or newspaper.
All I can say is, thank heaven for blogs and bloggers so that I at least know there are other "real" readers out there!
(And, you can come play, too, over at the Booking Through Thursday blog! The more the merrier.)

Tannenbaum.
House Calls

It’s nice to be able to share books with family and friends. My best friend and I have know each other since second grade and we often trade books. My family too shares books. It’s quite nice.
I agree with Kat.
Mine aren’t avid readers, the same goes to my friends. But I’m glad to know several bloggers friends who share the same passion. I don’t know what to do if there’s no internet/blogger, hehe.
Happy reading!
I had a friend like that, too — though we’re still in touch, we don’t “book talk” as much as we used to.
I can’t imagine not reading!
There hasn’t been a day during the past couple of years where I haven’t been reading a book. Even if it’s only a couple of chapters a day. My father is the same way. He has read so many books these past few months I’ve lost count. I always share my books with mom, dad and my sister Mary Beth. It’s nice being able to recommend a book to them that I thoroughly enjoyed. My sister and I love to talk about the books we’ve read at the same time. None of my friends read the way I do.
both my sons are massive readers. my older son, liam, is actually on the last book of the sword of truth series (#11), with approximately 600 pages per book, and he started right after school got out, around memorial day. and that’s with reading a bunch of other books, as well. the other boy reads just as prolificly, he just doesn’t read epics (yet, he’s only 13, lol).
both my brothers read, and my younger daughter picked up the habit when she started working customer service, and could read between calls.
now, as an adult, i have a few friends who read like i do, but i didn’t as a kid.
interesting part now? my younger son’s jr high requires a novel be brought to every class. i’ll have to ask my son about his high school
I’ve always loved to read since I was in grade school. I don’t think any in my family reads as much as I do. My eldest daughter loves to read and we’re hoping her little sister will end up loving to read too
I think my kiddo reads the most-he has the most time! I need to figure out how to read and knit at the same time… I’ve got 2 languishing right now…because I want the 2nd and 3rd in the Abhorsen trilogy and I’m having trouble reading other things because I want the rest of the story!!! Now off to check out that series Minnie mentioned.
I am sadly, that 1-in-4. Unless text counts. nahh
Yep, having a blog is great!
I love to read, but I confess to being a slow reader. A shame I know. But, I’ve been reading since I was a wee one and haven’t stopped yet. My parents, my husband, his parents, and all of our friends with the exception of perhaps 2 people read a lot. It would be hard for me to be friends with folks who don’t read.
I think it’s wonderful having a friend that long ^_^ and I checked your reading list. I wanna snag a couple of books from there. So many books, so little time!
I guess I’m lucky that so many of my friends and relatives are readers! One of the things I love about the BTT meme is seeing how similar or different my book-related experiences are to those of others.
My mom and I are big readers, mom being a bigger one than I since she is blind and only reads audiobooks. My dad and my sister don’t really read much. My dad has been reading a couple gardening books we got for him now and my sister occasionally hits upon an author whose books she devours and then she has a looong time before reading again. DH enjoys reading, but has so many other interests that his reading goes in spits and spurts. Lately he’s been reading a lot of books that I have recently finished. It makes for nice dinner conversation
Most of my friends are teachers too, and we’ve had a book club for over a year. Through them, I’ve found some great books that I might have otherwise missed. I, too, enjoy reading others’ blogs and finding books for my Amazon wishlist!
I agree about fellow bloggers. See my answer: http://smsbookreviews.blogspot.com/2007/08/booking-through-thursday-statistics.html
Even people in my book club only read that one book each month. These are people who like to read!! Recently an author came to speak here. Many of the audience members had not read her book. They had simply read about her, and wanted to hear what she had to say. Why didn’t they want to read what she had to say? I don’t get it…I read like I breathe. Don’t we all have to breathe? Oh well…to each his/her own and all that.
I never realized until reading the responses to this question, how lucky I am to come from an entire family of readers.
