Baby Steps
I know. It doesn’t really look like THAT much more than the last time I showed you, but really, this is several nights’ worth of knitting.
It’s still pretty, though, and isn’t that what matters?
And, I’m choosing to ignore the errors in the first pattern row that I made because the chart had dark squares for the light yarn and light squares for the dark yarn and I kept getting confused. I ended up colorizing the entire chart (instead of just the single stitch-repeat I’d colorized originally), and have continued on just fine. Remarkably, I find that I can ignore the errors I know are hiding down there with great equanimity!
Okay, so the other day, a friend was commenting on my monthly
reading list and asked when I found the time to read. In the ensuing
discussion, she described herself as a “goldilocks” when it comes to
reading–-she needs to have everything juuuuuust right to be able to focus.
This caught my attention because, first, I thought that was a charming
way of describing the condition, but, two, while we’ve talked about our
reading habits, this is an interesting wrinkle. I’d never really thought about it that way.So, this is my question to you–are you a Goldilocks kind of reader? Do you need the light just right, the background noise just so loud
but not too loud, the chair just right, the distractions at a minimum? Or can you open a book at any time and dip right in, whether it’s
for twenty seconds, while waiting for the kettle to boil, or
indefinitely, like while waiting interminably at the hospital–as long
as the book is open in front of your nose, you’re happy to read?
I think I’ve made it pretty clear that I am definitely NOT a Goldilocks reader, right? Basically, so long as my hands are dry and I’m not doing something that requires full concentration for safety reasons or for other reasons, or that requires two hands, and I’m awake, I’m reading. Yes, I read while . . . .
Eating. Brushing my teeth. Lying in bed. In front of the television. During lunch. While stirring things on the stove. While waiting for webpages to load. In the bathroom. Between answering emails. While out in public. Waiting for airplanes. During any spare five minutes I can find. Hey, I’ve even read in dark-ish movie theaters while waiting for the film to begin.
Please come over to the Booking Through Thursday blog to play along!

House Calls

you should know i’m not a goldilocks. i’ve even been known to read in the bathtub. for the rare times i take a bath (usually when i have a migraine) it helps distract from the headache while i soak.
when i used to work in a call center, i would read between calls. it got to the point that i’d keep a pencil at my desk, and mark EXACTLY where i was in the book, so that when the call ended, i could return to where i was without a lot of searching.
yes, i erased every mark.
and now, my daughter works there, and she does the same thing, lol!
I’m definitely not a goldilocks – I’d never get any reading done! ;o)
Your Autumn Rose is going to be gorgeous!! Have you thought about knitting the stitches that are supposed to be purled and then dropping them and purling them when you’re done?
Oh and I got my Will Taylor lazy kate…I’m totally in love with it
))
Nice start to Autumn Rose. Looking lovely!
I am sooo not a Goldilocks reader! When I was young, I would get in trouble with my mother for “ignoring” her, when I had actually never heard her in the first place because I was so deep into the book. Fear of going in that deep is part of what keeps me from reading more often than I do–I usually have to be dragged out kicking and screaming.
I’m certainly not a Goldilocks reader – I got told off as a child for walking around the house reading, including going down the stairs, and I still do it now. I read anywhere and every time there’s the tiniest opportunity.
Yes, I do read whenever I get the chance. But no loud music though because it takes away my concentration.
Happy BTT!
I’m right there with you! I can’t begin to imagine how much I wouldn’t read if I needed things “just so”. LOL…
I read everywhere, too; I keep books all over the house and pick up whenever I have to wait for something. I also have a book in the car and one in my purse, in case I’m at the bank or go out to lunch.
Your knitting is beautiful!
Gorgeous ribbing! That always takes me the longest.
I can read fiction pretty much anywhere, but I’m more of a Goldilocks with non-fiction
Me neither! For some reason, BTT wouldn’t take my link. It’s weird.
I read pretty much everywhere too! Especially if it is a good book, then I find myself reading in lots of interesting situations.
I’m with you – as long as there’s light, I can read. (And without light, I can listen…)
(your knitting looks wonderful!)

I’m not a goldilocks, though I have this odd compulsion (that only appeared a few years ago and has gotten worse) to not put down a book until I’m at the end of a chapter. DH is that way too. That makes reading in some of those locales you mentioned not my favorite, especially if I’m reading a book that has long chapters. It also means it takes me much longer to read a book that had long chapters, regardless of the actual length of the book. Weird, I know
I can’t imagine being a goldilocks. I have too many interests and my restlessness keeps me moving between them a lot, so it would be hard to get much read if I couldn’t read in bursts during everything else!
You and I are alike! My BTT is up!
I am not so much of a Goldilocks reader, but I can’t read in little bits at a time. I guess I’m a binge-and-purge reader. If it catches my attention, I read until it’s done, at the expense of knitting, verbal communication, housework, cooking, family, you name it. The purging comes a few days later when I can’t remember the name of the book, the author, the main characters, the plot…
Great question this week!! I’m no Goldilocks either!!
I pretty much just read it when I want to. Or else if I waited for the perfect time, I won’t get any reading done.
Happy BTTs – have a good day!
I’m not a Goldilocks either. I do find myself putting down a book in the middle of an intense part, I then think about it do some things then come back to it. My stepson also does the same thing he says it makes the good parts last longer! I’m all for that!
I think the ribbing on your sweater is gorgeous! I can relate when you say it doesn’t look like much more. I am working on a throw and the same thing happens to me. I’m working across 204 stitches. So good for you and keep going. It will be a beautiful sweater to wear.
BTW…I’m not a Goldilocks either but I have yet to find myself reading a book while I brush my teeth. I believe you are the first person I know who does that. LOL
I’m not a Goldilocks. Have read in stopped traffic, movie theaters before movies, waiting for doctor, watching tv, etc my whole life too. I have always been an avid reader. I block out the world and read for whatever time I have to fill in.
Your Autumn Rose is looking great so far! The only one who will ever know you made a few “design elements” will be you.
I see nary an error there. Lovely! Ok, I’m not a Goldilocks reader, but dang – you take the cake!
Your knitting is beautiful! I wish I could catch on to that gift!
I had to laugh at your comment: read while pages load, me too, me too!
This is a very interesting question. I had to think a bit about my answer
I’m stunned. May I copy your answer word for word? That’s exactly how I would describe my reading habits (including the theater). I don’t read while actually driving, but I do sometimes read the newspaper headlines at stoplights in the morning
Nah, not a goldilocks reader either, but sure don’t read as much as you. DH doesn’t like the light at bedtime, so I read at night with a headlamp-one of the cheap ones, because they’re the only ones I can find with a ‘red’ night vision light! Beautiful knitting so far, and isn’t that what’s important, that you’re loving it? That Veronik Avery book looks interesting…will have to keep an eye out.
I’m no Goldilocks, but I probably fall closer to the middle on the medium than most of those who have responded so far.
I can and do read anywhere and anytime but sometimes a book requires a more required environment if I want to get full pleasure from it.
I feel the same way. I can read anytime/anywhere/nything.
