I Keep Telling You

IMG_6327 What is that Curry-colored blob, you ask?

IMG_6312 It’s my almost-but-not-quite finished Japanese Shawl. I started binding it off tonight and am about 1/3 through the bind off.

The problem?

IMG_6319 This is all the yarn I have left in this skein. I have more, mind you, but . . . you can see that I’m going to have to join to the new skein to be able to finish the darn thing.

Sigh.

I keep telling you that Zephyr just doesn’t like me.

IMG_6308 It was a gray, dreary, wet, icky day today. Judging by the amount of icy slush this morning, we must have had about 2″ of snow last night before it switched over to freezing rain, and then it rained ALL day today. All. Day. Blah. The only saving grace was that it was in the mid- to upper-thirties, so at least it wasn’t freezing as it hit. But still. Blahhhhhhh. I took this picture on the way to work this morning. (I was waiting for a train, if you hadn’t figured that out.) Luckily for me, at least, the roads were more messy than slippery. The closest I came to an accident was when three deer when bounding across the street two driveways up the street after I left the house. One of the deer actually fell herself when her hind legs went out from under her as she hit the slick pavement. I didn’t come near to hitting any of them, but if I’d been going faster or hadn’t seen them in time to safely brake the car, I could have. And then, there were three or four more waiting until I moved on to cross the road to join their friends, too. I saw them flying across the road in my rear-view mirror. But, you know how clannish deer can be.

The plus side is that tomorrow is supposed to be at least partly sunny and almost 40 degrees AND I’m not going to work because it’s Mom’s actual birthday tomorrow. (She’s a Valentine, you know.) I still don’t know what we’re going to actually do, but, well, I can’t leave her to wander aimlessly around on her birthday, now, can I? And then I figured I’d take Friday off, too, because, well . . . why not make it a long weekend?

I’ve been on a classic young-adult reading binge so far this month and just finished the seventh Anne of Green Gables book. Although, really, she’s just a bit player in the last few. The final book is interesting, I think, because it focuses on her daughter Rilla and the struggle through WWI–one of the few LM Montgomery books that really addresses serious issues. (Or at least, LMM books still in print.) They’re good, though, and it’s been a while since I got through the entire series. Now I’m moving on to Louisa May Alcott…. Wholesome, childhood books just seem to fit so nicely with gray, gloomy days, don’t you think? Although I was not drinking hot tea when I read them the first time….

Hey, let me ask you–on the Blogger blogs, they’ve got new options for leaving comments. You can use your Blogger login (if you have one), or you can use your “OpenID” which supposedly includes Wordpress logins.  Am I the only person who can NOT get this to work? Every time I try, I get a “Log into your Wordpress account” error message, except, I’m pretty much always logged in, so that instead of making it easier to leave comments, they’ve made it ten-times harder. I can use the “Name/URL” option to actually leave a comment, but since that doesn’t include an e-mail address, it makes it impossible for the blogger to respond to my comment via e-mail if they’re so inclined. Really. Is it only me??

  1. I love the L.M. Montgomery books. Rilla of Ingleside is one of favorites, though I also love Jane of Lantern Hill and The Blue Castle. And the Emily books. Well, all of them actually. I f you want to read L.M. Montgomery talking about more serious stuff you should read her journals. There are five volumes of them out, and they’re very interesting but, I warn you, at times quite depressing. It’s fascinating how the fiction she was writing was almost a fantasy of the happy life she dreamed of having.

  2. OpenID… I only have to log in about every 2 weeks. It doesn’t bother me none otherwise :) You must put your URL (and not your user name like I did the first time) in the field underneath the Open ID thingy and choose Wordpress from the drop down menu (if you have this option).

  3. At least you have enough to finish it. It could be worse! I totally can’t stand this weather. Feb. is my least favorite month. Period.

  5. Happy Birthday to your mom!

You’re not the only one that can’t get the openID to work. I gave up and just use the blogger/google option.

  6. I haven’t tried the OpenID thing - I’m wondering if it maybe doesn’t work for WP not on the actual WP domain?

Ah, that shawl is just out to irk you, isn’t it?!

Happy birthday to your mom! And I shall be thinking jealously of you today and tomorrow as I sit at my desk. :)

  7. Deb, I don’t have the answer to the thing that prevents people from posting on Blogspot. I know people visit me there, but I get relatively few comments, except from other Blogspot people. It’s too bad, really. I’m interested that you’re working your way through the Anne books. Part of me wants to revisit YA classics, and part is afraid they won’t hold up for me. Stay strong in this Blah weather. Your photo looks lots like what I see out my window.

  8. OH I throughly enjoyed reading all the Anne of Green Gable books a few months ago, although it seriously damaged me from being able to watch the final movie. I have to just think of it as a complete break from the books and a completely different story line.

There was nothing in it even remotely like the book! I was shocked.

  10. At least you have another skein to finish the bind off. I had to use completely different yarn to finish the faroese shawl I made from your handspun!

I no longer comment on Blogspot/Blogger sites because I get all kinds of errors and this login isn’t recognized stuff. It’s a shame as I really have many Blogger sites that i enjoy reading but commenting is too much of a hassle. So, in short (Ok, not really) it’s not you. :)

  11. I am not a fan of the options that blogger provides for commenters. They make it really difficult for the blogger to respond to the comments which is why I did not sign up for blogger. I’m a typepad gal. Zephyr is messing with you, that’s for sure. At least your are on the bind off. I recognize that railroad crossing (Rt 53 & Foxhill Rd/Park Rd). Happy v-day to you all & Happy b-day to your Mom!

  12. I can say without any embarrassment that I cried in Rilla of Ingleside. My favourite non-Anne Montgomery book is magic for Marigold. I quote it in everyday life, and no-one else in the world (except maybe my mother) knows what I am talking about.

I have trouble periodically with comments, but I think it’s because I am something of a luddite. Some days it’s all I can do to turn on the darned computer.

  13. While it is a pain to start another skein just to bind off, at least you have the yarn and don’t have to tink back a row or two like I did with Hyrna. I just didn’t have anymore.

I took a look at the wordpress openid thing. That login is if your wordpress is hosted by them at wordpress.com, not a self hosted. Your credentials that you use to post are in your own database on your hosted site. You can create an account with them, but then why bother, you can always use the google one instead.

  14. Happy Birthday to your Mom!

Also, you are not alone, I can’t get the WP login thingy to work and I have a wp.com account.
