Dip
When we were little, whenever my parents would throw a party, this bowl would come out of the cabinet–a big one for chips and a little one for dip. Invariably, it was onion dip–you know the one, made with sour cream and Lipton Onion Soup Mix? We adored the stuff and, frankly, thought they should have more parties because that was about the only time we ever got to eat it.
Anyway, it’s a very 1960/1970’s kind of bowl. For Easter last week, we thought it would be nice to bring it out for old time’s sake. A blast from the past, as it were. My sister’s face lit up with recognition the minute she saw it.
And, of course that’s onion dip. Sure, salsa and tortilla chips would have worked, or some other, more modern dip but … why break with tradition?

I’m glad I’m not a potato chip/onion dip fan, or I’d be in the same boat as Carole.

mmmmmmm I love chips and dip. We have the same bowl combination also used exclusively for chips and onion dip (sour cream with boxed onion soup mix as well). damn. now I want some.
Now I want some too! These types of vintage “snack sets” are so cool. I see you went traditional with the Wise chips. Ruffles are also good with onion dip.

It was fun bringing out the old dip/chip set.
The chips are Cape Cod potato chips. Before you could get them in NJ Deb and I used to bring bags of them home from MV.

Mmmm onion dip is the best. I actually prefer the tradtional dip over salsa any day. Isn’t it wonderful how something such as your chip and dip bowl can bring backs wonderful memories. Hmmm. Now I want some dip.

Oh man, that looks so good. One of my downfalls-chips. Ya know, I can even get Cape Cod chips in AL.. Very neat dip set.
How fabulous is that chip and dip set! Martha Stewart would be all over that if she saw it. She’d have that in Macy’s faster than you could say onion dip. I must also meeee toooo on the onion dip, though at our house we just bought the container of premade in the dairy case. I don’t think my mom knows that Lipton Soup mix exists.

Really, Debbie! That was completely unfair. Chips and dip. I wish I had some (or if not…. maybe some popcorn…).
That said, I recently discovered that non-fat plain yogurt is a wonderful substitution for sour cream and mixes just as well with onion soup or other dip mixes. I doubt most would even know the difference without being told. So I strongly recommend yogurt onion dip with carrots or celery sticks (or any other raw vegetable).
But I dare say, it is impossible to find a reasonable low-cal substitute for potato chips. How I love potato chips!
