How Bad IS Gray Hair, Anyway?
I colored my hair last night–much needed, I might add–but the fumes set off my asthma and … ick. This doesn’t happen every time, but … every now and again. And it doesn’t help that my hair is long so that the fumes waft into my face whenever I move my head. (And it takes about four days of washing to get the hair color smell out of my hair.) Needless to say, I wore my hair in a ponytail today, but tonight, ever since I washed my hair? Um …
Is the beauty thing really worth this?
Let’s see … knitting-wise, I’m just about done with my pretty white lining. I just need to bind off, sew in the ends, put together a couple seams and then … figure out the next step. Something I’ve pondered about, but it’s something that I need to see the physical object to judge. So, that next step is something I’ll be thinking about tomorrow or the next day.
I still haven’t decided for sure about my next project, but there are options floating around in the back of my head, so that’s encouraging.
Ooh. Did you know that there are some short films from Wallace and Gromit over at Hulu.com?How can you resist? Chappy just adores Gromit–he’s even smarter than Snoopy. (Who is Chappy’s idol for cool. But then, isn’t he everyone’s?)
Not to mention the movie Xanadu. (Hey, it’s ridiculously corny, but the music’s not terrible, and it’s got Gene Kelly. Not to mention lots of roller skating and some outrageous costumes … even if the plot doesn’t, um, exactly hang together very well.)
And, meanwhile? Watching the Olympics. Lots of the Olympics–Mom called me a junkie (grin).

Tannenbaum.

The painting, the skating, the music, the name, and that man.
What’s not to love?

I soooo struggle with the hair coloring thing. My first gray showed up at age 18 and my temples are pretty much white by now, unless I dye them.
I’m still using “level 2″ dyes, which last about a month. I like to think they aren’t as harsh looking as permanent dyes. I do my own one month, and pay for a good job at the salon the next month. (This was my stylist’s idea for how to save money!)
I wish I could let it all go gray. I’m 40, after all. I really hate the fake look hair gets when it’s dyed too dark or too rich, so I’ll probably back off the dyeing sometime soon.
I’m sorry to hear you’re allergic. Have you tried henna?

I’m an Olympics junky too. And I only have a few gray hairs so far, but I see nothing wrong with gray at all… my mom’s parents have been trying to get her to color her hair for years, but we (my dad and I) keep telling her not to bother, since she doesn’t really want to.

I started going gray when I was in college. When I was in my mid-30s, I tried dying it, twice, and decided that it wasn’t worth the time and mess. I have very few fashion/appearance things that annoy me; one of them is undyed roots showing. So, my hair has been mostly white for 20 years now, and I’m OK with that.

I am growing tired of the hair dye thing as well. I’ve been battling the gray with hair dye since I was 19. Last week two lovely grayhaired women my age were pretty convincing that I should let nature take its course. Not quite ready yet but …….. soon.

Personally, I can’t wait for my gray to come in. Mostly so that I can save on getting my hair highlighted to dye pink over it!
For the smell, I like to use a pleasant-smelling conditioner on day #2. Won’t strip the color (much) and will help with the distinctive odor.

A ponytail?! Sweet.
I couldn’t take the commercial hair dye anymore, so I switched to Lush’s henna and I love it! No more allergic reactions — no more fumes. You have to leave it on longer, but other than that it really isn’t much different to apply.

Have you thought of changing products? You might be able to find one that isn’t so hard on you.
After ten years of coloring my hair, I used a temp color twice and then stopped. I’ve used a couple of things to help strip the color out of hair, but mostly I’m just waiting.
I have older friends who do not color their hair and love how it looks. Plus I don’t want to be one of those little old ladies with the boot black hair, ya know? Thankfully, I don’t buy into most of the Madison Ave nonsense, so I’m good. Fab, even.

Thanks for the W&G link!
Are there any other hair dyes that would work but be less hard on your asthma? I can sympathize - I take my own shampoo to the salon for my haircuts now. Last time, another stylist was spraying some product nearby and it took my 4-5 days to get that smell out of my hair. Scents like that can go migraine or asthma for me.

Just catching up on all my blogs - love the busy week you’ve had. I think gray is good - but I understand the desire to color. Cari of Dogs Steal Yarn had a huge post about natural hair color ideas. Might be worth looking into if you don’t like the smell or chemicals.

It’s not so bad. People in my family go gray early. I have fibromyalgia and I am sensitive to so many chemicals that I don’t even want to try to color my hair. I tell my hairdresser to look at Paula Deen when she asks me about the gray (white.)
