Rockin’ & Rollin’

ld1023269Well, we had some excitement last night … an earthquake! A 3.0 on the Richter Scale which, sure, makes it small by world standards, but BIG by New Jersey standards. Especially since the epicenter was only about a mile away, right here, in my very own hometown. The house shook. The noise was huge. Chappy woke up barking from a sound sleep.

It happened at about 10:35, and it took almost an hour before it was officially declared an earthquake. Thank heaven for Twitter, where I found other people wondering the same thing I was. “Was that an earthquake? Or an explosion?”

I even made a couple new Twitter friends, including Hilary who also writes and blogs about power-selling on eBay. Who knew? Maybe we can get together for coffee or something one of these days.

Anyway, so it turns out that I didn’t get anything accomplished last night except for some knitting. No writing–which makes me very naughty indeed.

On the other hand, I’m working on my sweater again. I’ve got my afghan done through the first chart and am giving it a short break while I get some inches on my sweater.

Oh–and how great was it that Chuck was back last night! I admit that I did NOT wear my 3D glasses while watching the episode–they made knitting too difficult. But I did pull it up on Hulu before and, while sitting in front of the computer, I have to say, the 3D effect was very cool. It’s just a shame that the glasses make everything so darn DARK.

Have you noticed? I really love this show…

  1. Earthquake? In New Jersey?!??! Truly, the Zombie Apocalypse must be nigh.

  2. Well, we DO get them, just usually small. This is just the first one I’ve ever felt!

  3. HA-HA-HA! Welcome to MY world!!!!!

I’ll admit that I never knew earthquakes made noise until I experienced my first one after moving here to So. Cal.!!!

Last month we had a quake that measured 4.5 that I actually HEARD for 20 or so seconds before it arrived! I didn’t know what the noise was until the house shook. Talk about spooky!

Fortunately for me the largest quake I’ve felt since I moved here registered a 5.1….and that was at the epicenter and was no where near that. I have a link I check whenever we “shake, rattle and roll” that gives more info than I need, but it’s still neat to “read all about it”! And my link, here in earthquake central? Well I’m able to get all the info I want within seconds of the quake happening — like I can’t surf to the site fast enough once the shaking stops!

So, bottom line, did you enjoy your adventure?

  4. We had a 4.5 out here last week. I thought I heard a HUGE ship go by in the sound – like Titanic huge! Then I heard about the earthquake and realized that was probably what I heard!

  5. wow what excitement! We had a 4.5 friday about 15 miles north of us. It woke me up as well and the cat and dog freaked. Hubby who was right near the epicenter (and his co-workers) completely missed it. Hope no real damage happened! What’s up with the grounds plates lately huh??

  6. I usually think the little earthquakes are kinda fun. We had several of them in my area over a span of a few years, though I think they pretty much ended when this big one hit: http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eq_depot/2001/eq_010228/ I even found that one more entertaining than scary, but I was in a single-story building on bedrock, so didn’t move and shake quite as much as most people did.

  7. We had one several years ago, Epicenter less than a mile from me. Funny thing is I truly thought it was an explosion. There was a huge boom then the floor under my feet rippled! And it was a slate floor! I swear it scared the pants off me. Animals all freaked, I went outside to look for smoke from the explosion and when I didn’t find any turned on the radio, Yup it was an earthquake! We did actually have 2 small cracks in the walls right at the corners of the door openings. Don’t want to experience anything larger than what I did. It was only a 4.7 so it wasn’t a big one. It’s still that rippling floor that amazes me.

  8. On a trip to LA about 15 years ago, I was awakened at 5AM by rolling out of a waterbed onto the floor, while the floor shook and the walls rattled. It was seriously scary for a few moments. The next day, we took a drive and it was sobering just an hour away to see entire sidewalks that had shifted 3 feet or more. At the epicenter, it was a 7.5. A child was killed by a falling bookcase. This is why I will never live in California, even though I love it there. I guess I’ll never live in NJ either. :)

  9. I couldn’t believe the earthquake! I thought it was the furnace or hot water heater. Never imagined that it was an EARTHQUAKE!

  10. Oh nice! A 3.0 is an excellent Richter scale earthquake. Enough to feel but not enough to do much damage (usually)
