As annoying as I found our annual inspections in Texas, I have more respect for them now that I live in a state without mandatory inspections. I see some of the cars driving around here and KNOW they would never pass the inspection. Also, my current state bases your registration cost on the age of the car — cars more than 10 years old pay a fraction of what cars less than five years old pay, meaning they are encouraging people to keep cars longer. There’s nothing wrong with that, except that I wish they had to be inspected! (Sorry – can you tell this is a pet peeve of mine???)
